PM Dahal urges media for self-regulation to ensure accountability

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has asserted that the current government, prioritizing democracy and civil rights, is committed to safeguarding the freedom of expression.

PM Dahal emphasized that the government has consistently advocated for the adoption of self-regulation to enhance the credibility, responsibility, and accountability of the media using the latest technology.

He stated that leveraging new technology would significantly improve the dissemination of information content, with a focus on bolstering the credibility of the media in the long term.

“Government policy provisions promoting the use of technology and the growth of the journalism sector aim at regulation and management, not control,” added PM Dahal during a program organized on the 39th Anniversary of Nepal Television.

Expressing concern about the increased responsibility of mainstream media and journalists in the era of expanding social networking sites, Prime Minister Dahal warned of the potential harm to individuals, families, and society, leading to the weakening of the state due to false and biased news.

In light of this, he urged journalists and the journalism sector to approach their professional responsibilities with seriousness and sensitivity, emphasizing the importance of disseminating true, fair, and balanced news and information.
