KATHMANDU: In a commanding performance, Ireland emerged victorious by seven wickets against USA in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup opener held in Bloemfontein.

Opting to field first, Ireland’s captain Philippe Le Roux aimed to capitalize on the early movement, a decision that proved fruitful as the Irish pacers dominated the initial stages of the match.

Olly Riley, with a stellar display, claimed three key wickets in the first Powerplay, dismissing Prannav Chettipalayam, Siddarth Kappa, and Utkarsh Srivastava, leaving USA struggling at 26/4.

Wickets continued to tumble in the middle overs as the USA batters grappled against the pace of Riley and Reuben Wilson.

The absence of a substantial partnership resulted in USA being bowled out for a modest total of 105. Riley and Wilson showcased their bowling prowess, each finishing with three wickets.

USA, however, made an early impact with Arya Garg’s left-arm pace, removing two Irish wickets with the score at 5/2.

Nevertheless, a resilient partnership between Ryan Hunter and Kian Hilton steadied the ship for Ireland. The duo confidently negotiated the new ball, accumulating runs off loose deliveries and closing in on the 106-run target.

Despite Hilton’s dismissal in the 14th over, Ireland remained in control of their chase. Ryan Hunter’s outstanding half-century propelled the team towards victory, and captain Le Roux sealed the win in the 23rd over.

The Irish dugout erupted in jubilation as they marked a strong start to their campaign in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

This comprehensive win underscores Ireland’s potential in the tournament, showcasing their bowling strength and batting resilience in a challenging encounter against USA.
