Welcoming 2024: Celebrating English New Year with enthusiasm

KATHMANDU: Today marks the commencement of the English New Year 2024, according to the English calendar, signifying a fresh beginning and a time for global celebrations.

Across the world, diverse programs are underway to mark the advent of the new AD year, with Nepal witnessing an increasing influence of these festivities.

Notably, ‘New Year’s Eve’ programs took place in bustling areas like Thamel, Bauddha, Pokhara, Sauraha, Lumbini, and other parts of Kathmandu on Sunday evening, drawing in both locals and foreign tourists.

On this initial day of the English New Year, a growing trend of picnics is observed in Nepal, perhaps rooted in historical traditions dating back to the hanging of Jesus Christ.

Known as the Gregorian New Year, this celebration is linked to Pope Gregory’s introduction of the current calendar, replacing the Julian calendar.

As the world bids farewell to 2023 and welcomes 2024, the global excitement surrounding this international festival is evident.

The uniqueness of New Year’s Day lies in its ability to prompt reflection on the past year’s accomplishments, accompanied by renewed wishes and promises for the future.

On this special day, Nepal also celebrates “Nepali Topi Day,” a spontaneous recognition of Nepali identity both within the country and abroad, making January 1st a day of double festivities.

As we embrace the English New Year and Topi Day, may the year ahead be filled with joy, prosperity, and positive transformations!
