Govt, teachers’ agreement to be implemented by parliament: Education Minister Rai

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science and Technology Ashok Kumar Rai said implementation of the six-point agreement reached with the Nepal Teachers Federation was at the hand of sovereign parliament.

At a program organized here today on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the National Campaign for Education Nepal (NCE), Minister Rai clarified the parliament could amend the School Education Bill that was already registered in the parliament. The government would play a facilitating role in this, he added.

At the program, Assistant General Secretary of the Nepali Congress (NC), Badri Pandey said a conclusion would be drawn on consensus after holding serious discussion in the concerned committee on the bill tabled at the parliament.

CPN-UML Secretary Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai said the teachers were compelled to launch a struggle when the government was not sensitive to the issues concerning education.

Likewise, CPN (Maoist Centre) leader Dinanath Sharma said preparation of the long-awaited education bill was positive underlining the need for the political parties and parliament to seriously discuss establishing the right of the children to quality education.

Former Chairpersons of NCE, Gauri Pradhan, Bhuparaj Khadka, Dirgha Narayan Shrestha, Rajkumar Gandarva and Dilliram Subedi among others were felicitated on the occasion.
