Ruling, opposition parties at odds over forming parliamentary probe committee

KATHMANDU: The meeting of House of Representatives has been postponed till Wednesday afternoon after opposition and ruling parties remained at odds over forming a parliamentary committee.

Opposition parties including the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) obstructed the House proceedings demanding to form a parliamentary committee to probe the death of Sarlahi In-charge of the outlawed Biplav outfit, Kumar Poudel.

Lawmakers from NC and Rastiya Janata Party (RJP) picketed rostrum after Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa briefed the House about the ‘encounter’. Following which, Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara postponed the House for 15 minutes.

Speaker Mahara then held a meeting with Chief Whips of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), NC and RJP. The meeting ended inconclusively after opposition parties reiterated their demand to form a parliamentary probe committee which was rejected by the ruling party.

As the ruling and opposition parties remained at odds, the meeting was postponed till 1 pm tomorrow.
