Federal Parliament of Nepal and National People’s Congress of China sign six-point Memorandum of Understanding
The Federal Parliament of Nepal and the National People’s Congress (NPC) of the People’s Republic of China inked a six-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Kathmandu on Monday.
Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota, Speaker of Federal Parliament of Nepal, and Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s NPC, signed the agreement at an event held at the Federal Parliament Building in New Baneshwar, Kathmandu.
According to the agreement, both parties would exchange information on each other’s legislative, supervisory and governance practices.
The MoU between the two parliaments also mentions the Belt and Road Initiative, an ambitious project promoted by China.
Top leaders of ruling coalition still scrambling to thrash out seat sharing
A meeting of the top leaders of the ruling coalition has ended inconclusively yet again.
The top leader of the ruling alliance had discussed seat sharing for about 8 hours 40 minutes today (Monday).
The meeting had started from 9 am at Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu.
According to Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, the meeting could not thrash out differences despite being in discussions for long.
“Today there was a long discussion but unfortunately no conclusion has been reached,” Prachanda’s secretariat said, quoting the Maoist chair.
Nepal slips one places to 143rd rank in Human Development Index
Nepal has dropped one place in the Human Development Index (HDI), ranking 143 out of 192 countries in the 2021-2022 period, according to a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report.
The report has identified that different climate shocks are affecting world order, pushing back the growth that was achieved in the past few years.
UNDP has published its Human Development Index (HDI) report for 2021-22, noting that for the first time in 32 years that the UN agency has been calculating HDI, the index declined globally for two straight years.
US Ambassador Berry calls on COAS Sharma
United States Ambassador Randy W. Berry called on Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Prabhuram Sharma on Monday (today).
A meeting was held in the office of the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) at Nepal Army headquarters in Kathmandu.
The meeting was held as Ambassador Berry’s tenure is coming to an end and he is set to return home.
During the meeting, General Sharma congratulated the Ambassador, Berry for his successful tenure and wished him a happy future.
President administers oath to ambassadors to Myanmar and Malaysia
President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath of office and secrecy to two newly-appointed ambassadors on Monday.
During a special function organized at the Office of the President, Nepal’s Ambassador to Myanmar Harischandra Ghimire and Ambassador to Malaysia Dilliraj Poudel took the oath of office and secrecy, Spokesperson of the Office of President Sagar Acharya said.
Country’s ‘biggest’ 25 megawatts solar plant links with national transmission line
The country’s ‘biggest’ 25 megawatts solar plant based in Nuwakot has been connected to the national transmission line.
Constructed by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the project was completed three and half years after its foundation stone was laid on April 27, 2018. The project successfully tested power production 15 days ago.
“The power production test took place for consecutive two weeks. It was a success. More than 25 megawatts electricity is being generated due to favorable weather,” said the project Chief Bikash Raghubamshi.
The generated power from the project has connected to the national transmission line through the Devighat hydropower center at Bidur Municipality-6.
Home Minister and Law Minister hold talks with Prachanda
Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand and Law Minister Govinda Prasad Sharma Koirala met Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda on Monday morning.
Home Minister and Law Minister reached Prachanda’s residence at Khumaltar to discuss current political developments including various bills in the Parliament.
The leaders discussed November 20 elections, the current political scenario, Citizenship Bill, among others during the meeting.
Health Ministry to launch nationwide dengue control campaign
The Ministry for Health and Population has decided to launch a ‘Search and Destroy Larva’ campaign to destroy mosquitoes and prevent and control dengue.
The Ministry is to launch a nationwide campaign to control dengue in view of rapidly growing cases in the country of late.
Over 7,500 dengue patients have been reported in the country since its breakout recently, according to the Ministry.
The Ministry wrote to the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration so as to mobilize all 753 local levels to control the mosquito-borne viral disease.
The ‘Search and Destroy Larva’ campaign to be put in place aims to find out places where mosquitoes larva hide, and destroy them to prevent and control dengue, informed Bhim Prasad Sapkota, chief public health administrator in the Ministry.
Women’s SAFF Championship: Nepal registers second win
Nepal has trounced Sri Lanka 6-0 in its second match under the 6th women’s SAFF Championship football tournament.
In the match held at Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar today (Monday), Nepal registered its second win in the tournament. Earlier, host Nepal had defeated Bhutan in the inaugural match of the tournament.
With the win today, Nepal has reached the semi-finals.
In today’s match, Amisha Karki scored two goals while Saru Limbu, Rashmi Kumari Ghising, Amrita Jaisi and Deepa Shahi scored one goal each in Nepal’s victory.
Provisions barring Minister from campaigning in polls need to change: Maoist leader Shrestha
National Assembly member Narayan Kaji Shrestha has opposed the provisions of the Election Code of Conduct, which prohibits ministers from campaigning.
In the meeting of parliamentary committee meeting of the NA held on Monday, lawmaker Shrestha said, “The political system is multi-party and the leaders are made ministers, but when ministers themselves are not candidates they cannot campaign,” he said. “This should be changed.”
He stressed saving resources of the state and government during elections and advocated to establish mechanisms to prevent misuse of state resources.
Gold being traded at Rs 93,600 per tola today
The price of gold has decreased by Rs 300 in the domestic market today.
According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the hallmark gold is being traded at Rs 93,600 per tola.
The price of yellow metal was Rs 93,900 per tola on Sunday.
Nepal sees 179 new coronavirus cases, one death in past 24 hours
Nepal recorded a total of 179 new cases of coronavirus and one death in the past 24 hours as of Monday.
Of the confirmed cases, 127 were detected through the RT-PCR method and 52 through the Antigen method.
According to the Ministry of Health and Population, a total of 4,959 swab samples were tested in the past 24 hours.
Of them, 2,600 samples were tested through RT-PCR and 2,359 through the Antigen method.
NEPSE loses 13.54 points to settle at 1,912.74 on Monday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index lost 13.54 points to close at 1,912.74 points on Monday.
The index lost 0.70 percent today (Monday). The index had lost 11.47 points on Sunday.
Similarly, the sensitive index fell 2.39 points to close at 372.34 points.
The index that opened at 1,926.45 points made an intraday high of 1,928.71, an intraday low of 1,906.75 and ultimately closed at 1,912.74 points.
A total of 2,613,540 shares of 225 companies were traded via 20,558 transactions, resulting in a turnover of Rs 831 million in the secondary market today.
