UML wins majority seats in Biratnagar metropolis Executive Committee



KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has won the majority of seats in election to the Municipal Executive Committee in Biratnagar Metropolitan City.

The alliance of the 43 UML local representatives and three independently-elected representatives0 secured the most executive member posts in the 29-member Executive Committee in metropolis on Saturday, regardless of the fact that the ruling coalition parties had 50 elected representatives as voters.

In the election, five women members of the UML and one Dalit and minority local representative were elected.

Hem Bahadur Budathoki, information officer at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, said two executive members were also elected from the independent group that coordinated with the UML.

In the metropolis, the UML had won 43 seats, including the deputy mayor, and NC had won 40 seats including the mayor. 10 JSP candidates, three independents and one candidate of Rastriya Prajatantra Party had been election in May 13 local election. There were a total of 97 voters for elected members to the Executive Committee.

According to Election office, Deepak Kumar Karna of the CPN (UML) won with 53 votes, independent Om Prakash Kumar Sah with 55 votes and Sanjeev Sah with 52 votes.

All five UML candidates were elected women members. Suntali Devi Bishwas of UML won with 55 votes, Kamala Shrestha with 54 votes, Tara Kumari Rai with 53 votes, Sarita Ghimire Nepal with 53 votes and Khushbu Bishwakarma with 52 votes.

The members of the NC-JSP alliance supported the UML candidate to make the UML alliance victorious in the executive election.

With the victory, UML has reached the majority in the executive of the metropolis. The 29-member executive has 16 UML members, including the deputy mayor and 9 ward chairpersons.
