Man held with 100 grams of gold from TIA

KATHMANDU: Police arrested a man with gold from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Tuesday morning.

A team of security officials apprehended Saroj Karki, 28, with 100 kilograms of gold brought to Kathmandu from Qatar by concealing it inside a false bottom created inside a mixer, said Mahesh Bhattarai, the chief of the TIA Customs Office.

According to Customs Act, 2064, a Nepali passenger can bring 100 grams of gold but has to report it to the Customs Office and pay the tax as per the existing tax rules.

If the gold is imported by evading the custom revenue, the customs office will confiscate the gold and the importer will be fined the amount equivalent to the current price of the gold.
