Mechanism to be in place to resolve problems in tax system: Finance Minister Sharma

KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Janardan Sharma on Wednesday said that a mechanism would be created immediately to resolve problems surrounding the tax system and taxpayers.

“Complaints of taxpayers must be heard. I feel a need to set up a unit here wherein their complaints will be heard and resolved,” he said while addressing an event organized at the Inland Revenue Department, Lazimpat, on the occasion of the 10th National Tax Day.

Informers about tax leakage should be rewarded so as to discourage tax evaders and help increase tax collection, he was of the view. The revenue management would be made tech-savvy and taxpayer friendly in the days to come, he said.

Saying that the process to make the paperless tax system has started, he pledged its implementation. “It is a good step to start positive works. But it is not enough. Implementation is a must. So, I pledge to implement positive initiatives.” He also promised to manage vehicle scanners at customs points and for the government to print stickers itself.

Similarly, Finance Secretary Madhukumar Marasini said self-disclosure of tax was not a coercive method to collect tax but it is for good governance and prosperity. Both the tax payers and tax administration should move ahead together for building robust revenue system, he stressed, pointing out the need of further awareness among tax payers.

On the occasion, Revenue Secretary Krishna Hari Pushkar viewed that country was dependent on the revenue with the tax collected despite COVID-19 pandemic. He thanked the taxpayers for it. The Inland Revenue Department is said to have achieved 92.32 percent target.
