Ambassadors of US, UK and Australia visit Rara Lake

To learn about the impacts of climate change in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Ambassadors of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia have visited Rara Lake in Mugu district.

The ambassadors trekked to Rara through Talcha Airport.

Australian Ambassador Felicity Volk with American Ambassador Randy Berry and British Ambassador Nicola Pollitt visited Rara Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Nepal, to learn about the impacts of climate change in Nepal.

The team had an informative briefing from Rara National Park Warden, Badri Binod Dahal who talked about the way reduced snowfall has had a negative impact on food security and livelihoods, according to the Australian Embassy Facebook page.

They have also shared photos of the visit on their social media.

US Ambassador to Nepal Randy W. Berry, in his Facebook status, said that he was addressing the general curiosity as to why they had embarked on this journey.

“Rara Lake is the largest lake in the Nepali Himalayas. It is home to endemic species that face near-certain extinction. In the climate crisis, Nepalis risk losing their livelihoods in wildfires, floods, or drastic seasonal changes that cause crops to die out. At higher altitudes, what happens in those communities affects all others downstream. So why am I taking this trip? Because we want you to know about this.”
