Keeping kidneys healthy

Kidney diseases are called silent killers. This will largely affect the quality of your life. There are several ways to reduce the risk of preventing kidney diseases. Here are some tips:

Fit and active

Keeping yourself active and fit helps to reduce your blood pressure. This will, therefore, reduces the risk of chronic kidney disease. Keep in mind the concept “on the move for kidney health”.

Control your blood sugar level

People who have diabetes are likely to have kidney disease, which even damages the kidney. Therefore, people with diabetes are suggested to have regular kidney tests.

Check your blood pressure

High blood pressure can lead to a heart attack or a stroke. This is also one of the most common causes of kidney damage. Make sure to maintain your blood pressure at 120/80. High blood pressure is likely to cause kidney damage.

Eat healthily, maintain your weight

Eating healthy can help prevent diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and other conditions that are associated with chronic kidney disease.

Reduce salt intake. Doctors recommend sodium intake of 5-6 grams of salt per day. Limit the amount of processed or restaurant food

Healthy fluid intake

Consume liquid intake to maintain good health. Consuming plenty of fluid or water helps the kidneys clear sodium, urea and toxins from the body. Even though doctors do not suggest excessive water intake, around two liters daily may reduce the risk of decline in kidney function.

Do not smoke

Smoking slackens flow of blood to the kidneys. When the kidney gets less blood, it weakens their ability to function properly. Likewise, smoking also increases the risk of kidney cancer.

Do not take pills regularly

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen are known to cause kidney damage if taken regularly.

Get your kidneys checked regularly if you have diabetes, hypertension, are obsessed, or if your parents suffer from kidney disease.
