KATHMANDU: The government is making preparations to sell electricity to other countries as the production of electricity exceeds the demand of Nepal.

With the increase in electricity generation in Nepal since this month, the generation capacity has reached 1953 MW. As the demand for electricity is only 1,500 MW at most, the remaining 453 MW will be sold to Bangladesh and India.

According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the national transmission line has reached 1953 MW with the addition of 456 MW from Upper Tamakoshi and 15 MW from solar.

A meeting of the Secretary-level Joint Steering Committee on Mutual Cooperation in the Energy Sector between Nepal and Bangladesh was held on Tuesday under the co-chairmanship of Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Devendra Karki and Secretary at the Ministry of Power and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh Mohammad Habibur Rahman.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Madhu Prasad Bhetuwal informed that the Ministry has set a target of supplying electricity to Bangladesh by mid-April, 2022 as the discussion on the use of Indian and Nepali infrastructure was positive.

Although Bangladesh will immediately purchase 200 MW of electricity, it aims to purchase 900 MW by 2041, said spokesperson Bhetuwal.
