“World’s longest” suspension bridge in Baglung gets its name



KATHMANDU: The “world’s longest” suspension bridge in Baglung district linking Baglung and neighboring Parbat district has been given its name in Nepali and English.

The 567 meters long bridge over the Kaligandaki River has been named ‘Gandaki Golden Bridge’ in English and ‘Gandaki Sunaulo Jhula’ in Nepali.

An executive meeting of Baglung Municipality, the patron of the bridge, took a decision in this regard. The bridge’s name in Nepali and English has been approved, said the municipality mayor Janak Raj Poudel.

The municipality had called for interested people to propose the name of the bridge. The municipality has also announced Rs 25,000 for the selected applicant.

Only the top 10 names suggested by applicants had been recommended. Civil servant Ghana Shyam Sapkota of municipality-5 has been selected for the award.

The municipality has applied for the bridge to claim the Guinness World Records title as the world’s longest suspension bridge.
