EC updates Parliament Secretariat about newly-registered parties

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has notified the Federal Parliament Secretariat about the registration of the CPN-Unified Socialist and Democratic Socialist Party (DSP).

According to the Parliament Secretariat, there are 30 federal lawmakers in the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led Unified Socialist party and 14 in the DSP.

According to the EC Spokesperson Raj Kumar Shrestha, the EC also informed the Parliament Secretariat that four more UML-elected lawmakers have also applied to remain in the CPN Unified Socialist party. They are Som Prasad Pandey, Maya Gyawali, Sharda Devi Bhatta and  Tulsa Thapa, wife of UML Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam.

Though they went to the EC to be part of Unified Socialist on Wednesday, the election body could not verify them as party Chair Nepal had not forwarded their names. The EC has yet to take on call on their applications.

After the government issued an ordinance provisioning split of a political party with either 20 percent federal parliament lawmakers or central committee members, the UML split into the CPN-Unified Socialist and the Janata Samajbadi Party into the DSP. Both the parties were recognized by the Election Commission on Wednesday.
