KATHMANDU: A total of 13,396 people have been rescued so far through search and rescue operations launched in areas affected by the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on August 26.
According to Shanti Mahat, spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 3,533 of those rescued are currently taking shelter safely at 39 holding centres in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. She said 1,357 bodies have been recovered so far following the flood.
Of the recovered bodies, 98 have been identified and handed over to their families, Mahat said. According to the Authority, 5,326 people are still reported missing.
Mahat said the highest number of missing people are from Rasuwa, with 2,860 reported missing, followed by 1,981 from Nuwakot. The remaining missing persons include Nepali Army personnel, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel, government employees from various agencies and citizens from other districts.
A total of 6,827 injured and affected people have received primary medical treatment since the flood. According to the Authority, 327 people were treated at 10 different hospitals, of whom 242 have been discharged. A further 3,404 people from the Nepali Army and 3,096 from the Armed Police Force have received medical treatment.
Various state agencies have continued relief and management efforts to accommodate displaced and affected citizens in safe locations and meet their basic needs.
The Nepal Police, Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, local governments and various government and non-government agencies have been actively involved in search, rescue, treatment and relief operations following the extensive loss of life and property caused by the Bhotekoshi flood.
According to the Authority, search and rescue efforts for those still missing have been intensified, while rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities in the affected areas are being carried out in a coordinated manner.
