Provide compensation to Durga Prasad’s family if sought: Kolkata High Court

JHAPA: India’s Kolkata High Court has ordered the West Bengal state government to provide compensations to the family of Durga Prasad Timsina of Ilam provided the family seeks it.

Issuing a verdict on Durga Prasad Timsina’s case on Monday, the court has ordered the West Bengal government to provide compensation if his family demands it.

“Citing the poor economic condition of Timsina’s family, the court has ordered the state government to provide him compensation,” a lawyer advocating on Timsina’s case said, “However, the court has not mentioned the amount to be provided.”

Holding the state administration responsible for imprisoning Timsina irrespective of the fact that the latter was not mentally sound and had poor economic condition, the court has regarded it the state’s duty to compensate him.

Timsina who passed more than four decades in various jails in India was released without a hearing on Sunday.

He was released from Dumdum Jail, Kolkata.

The court had ordered Timsina’s release on Wednesday.

Timsina was handed over to his family in the presence of officials at Nepali Consulate Office in Kolkata.
