KATHMANDU: Preparations are being made to remove the odd-even rule imposed on vehicles in the Kathmandu Valley.
Despite the smooth operation of vehicles across the country, the system was still in force in the Kathmandu Valley.
In the Kathmandu Valley, the odd-even rule had been imposed in all vehicles from September 10, even though the lockdown has been lifted citing the reduction of COVID-19.
Although the government has been claiming that the corona pandemic will be reduced through forceful means, the rate of infection in the valley is continuously increasing. Recently, the scope of testing has been narrowed.
A meeting of the chief district officers of all the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley had decided to continue an odd-even rule on the vehicles.
Stakeholders were outraged as there was no initiative for its management for a long time. A high-ranking official said, “It will be decided in two or three days. We are also coordinating with the Home Ministry. We have moved forward to remove the force.”
Despite the use of rule to control the crowd, there have been demonstrations by various political parties in recent times.
Officials of the security forces had been in favor of removing the rule saying that it was only for the benefit of the people but they could not stop the large demonstration.
Motorcycle users have been hit the hardest. Even though motorcycles are not public transport, the meeting of the Chief District Officers of the Kathmandu Valley held in August had implemented an odd-even rule on motorcycles as well.
Currently, the metropolitan traffic department has been taking action against dozens of vehicles daily for violating the rule
