Nepali scammer in Australia sentenced to 18 months for stealing from elderly



KATHMANDU: A Nepali student has been sentenced to a maximum 18-month jail for targeting and scamming elderly residents almost 20,000 dollars.

According to reports in Australian media, the youth targeted elderly residents in their retirement homes.

The con was orchestrated from an Indian call center. As per the modus operandi, they ring residents saying that their credits cards have been fraudulently accessed and they were sending help.

The Nepali national picked up the card, withdrew cash, transferred some oversees and keep a portion of the profit, 9 News Australia reported.

An 86-year old was defrauded of 5,000 dollars. Total credit cards from four victims were used 21 times raking up 18,500 dollars, the report said.
