NEW DELHI: India has been elected to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member.
India got elected as one of the non-permanent members to the UNSC from the Asia-Pacific category with a majority of 184 votes out of 192.
This is the eighth time that the country has been elected to UNSC.
India has so far served seven times in 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and 2011-2012.
India was the only candidate in the Asia-Pacific Group (APG).
India was the candidate in the APG and was endorsed last year by the APG after Afghanistan gave up its seat for India, reports said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the global community for supporting India’s membership to the United National Security Council.
“Deeply grateful for the overwhelming support shown by the global community for India’s membership of the @UN Security Council. India will work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, resilience and equity,” he said on Twitter.
