Durga Prasai denied release in cybercrime case

KATHMANDU: Viral medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, arrested on charges of cybercrime, will not be released from custody as per a Supreme Court decision.

A joint bench of Justices Mahesh Sharma Paudel and Nityananda Pandey rejected a habeas corpus petition filed on Prasai’s behalf, declining his release.

Despite rejecting the petition, the court directed the government to ensure Prasai receives necessary medical treatment.

The petition was filed by his son, Nirajan Prasai, naming the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Nepal Police Headquarters, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and the Kathmandu District Court as defendents.

Earlier, on Sunday, the Kathmandu District Court had extended Prasai’s detention by five days but also instructed authorities to make arrangements for his cancer treatment.

The CIB arrested Prasai from his Kathmandu residence on November 19 after he publicly accused former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of investing  32 billion rupees in Cambodia through a video containing “fake information.”

This is not Prasai’s first cybercrime case. Previously, he was released on bail of NPR 100,000 in a similar case.
