Pathibhara sees surge in foreign tourists, attracting visitors beyond India

KATHMANDU: The famous Shaktipeeth of Pathibhara in Taplejung has seen a noticeable increase in foreign tourist arrivals, with visitors coming not only from neighboring India but also from countries such as the United States, Japan, Thailand, and the Netherlands.

The Pathibhara Area Development Committee credits the surge to the site’s unique blend of religious significance and natural beauty.

“Previously, foreign devotees were predominantly from India. However, recent months have seen a broader international presence,” said Prajin Hangbang, Executive Director of the committee.

On Tuesday alone, over a dozen foreign tourists visited the area, including a group of Dutch nationals. “Tourists enjoyed worshipping at the temple and were captivated by the stunning mountain views,” Hangbang said.

Ravi Lama, a guide from JRN Trek and Expedition, who has escorted foreign tourists to Pathibhara multiple times, shared that international visitors often express admiration for Nepal’s spiritual heritage and scenic landscapes.

From mid-July to early November, 478 foreign nationals visited Pathibhara, with most hailing from India, according to Shishir Koirala, Police Assistant Inspector at the Tourist Assistance Police Cell in Kaflepati.

The development committee believes the influx of tourists is due to promotional efforts and sees potential for even greater numbers with improved infrastructure.

Plans are underway to upgrade trekking routes, construct amenities such as toilets and drinking water facilities, and install solar lights along the trail. Additionally, a telephone tower with internet access is being proposed to enhance communication in the area.

Pathibhara attracts millions of devotees annually, drawn by the belief in its power to fulfill wishes. To ensure their safety and convenience, the Tourist Assistance Police Cell, established earlier this year, provides support along the trekking route.
