KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Balendra Shah held discussions with lawmakers representing the Tarai-Madhes region.
According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the meeting, held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar, focused on recent incidents in the region and the situation arising from them.
RSP lawmakers participating in the discussions included Rahbar Ansari, Nitima Bhandari (Karki), Rabindra Patel, Manish Jha, Rabin Mahato, Rajkishore Mahato, Ganesh Dhimal, Chandan Singh, Bikram Thapa, Mohanlal Acharya, Ghazala Shamim Mikrani, and others.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Shah also held separate consultations with leaders of Madhes-centric political parties.
The Prime Minister had invited regional leaders to discuss ways to ease tensions that have emerged in Sunsari and other districts of Madhesh Province and to strengthen social harmony. Leaders participating in the meeting described the discussions as positive.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shah sought suggestions on measures that could help maintain peace and order in Madhesh and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Leaders said they presented proposals to address the recent problems seen in several Tarai districts and found the Prime Minister sensitive to the issue and committed to resolving it.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the leaders said such consultations could play an important role in finding a lasting solution.
Janamat Party Chairman Dr. CK Raut said the Prime Minister’s first formal discussion with Madhes-centric political leaders was a positive step and that they had offered practical suggestions to address the current tensions.
Rajendra Mahato said he urged the government to implement past agreements reached with Madhesh and to become more proactive in addressing the region’s concerns. He also called for a fair investigation into the Sunsari incident and a timely resolution of the issue.
Leaders participating in the earlier discussion included Dr. CK Raut, Mahantha Thakur, Rajendra Mahato, Lalbabu Raut, Samim Miya Ansari, Ram K. Sharma, Prabhu Shah, Amaresh Kumar Singh, Sharat Singh Bhandari, Jayakanta Raut, and others.
