Oli says violence has been given legitimacy, criticizes political instability

KATHMANDU: KP Sharma Oli, Chair of the CPN-UML, has claimed that incidents of vandalism, violence, killings and looting that took place on September 8 and 9, 2025, have been given legitimacy.

Speaking at the national assembly of the Nepal Confederation of Sports in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Oli said that certain forces, unable to bring change through constitutional means, had resorted to unconstitutional activities including destruction, violence and unrest in an attempt to topple the government, and that such actions were now being legitimized.

He said efforts were made to rebuild the economy after the devastation caused by earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to advance the education, health and sports sectors, but claimed those efforts were not acceptable to some groups.

Oli added that his side would continue working toward building a fear-free and peaceful Nepal where citizens can access justice.

He also criticized what he described as government interference in sports administration, saying that even smaller and newly developing countries had performed well in the FIFA World Cup while Nepal faced sanctions on its football governing body, the All Nepal Football Association.

Oli stressed that sports development in Nepal should not hinder athletes’ physical development and capabilities.

He further said the Nepal Sports Federation should not only focus on sports training but also help produce responsible citizens who understand national issues and contribute to the country’s development.
