U.S. envoy Sergio Gor arrives in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Donald Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday evening.

Gor currently serves as the US ambassador to India and is considered a close associate of Trump. Alongside his ambassadorial role, he has also been entrusted with responsibilities as special envoy for South and Central Asia.

During his visit, Gor is expected to meet Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, as well as other officials and political leaders.

According to sources, Gor has also requested a meeting with Prime Minister Balen Shah. However, the prime minister has yet to decide whether to meet him. Gor is the highest-ranking US official to visit Nepal since the formation of the Rastriya Swatantra Party-led government on March 27.

In the past, visiting foreign diplomats—regardless of rank—would typically meet Nepal’s top leadership, including the prime minister. However, this practice appears to be changing under the current administration.

Notably, Prime Minister Shah also declined to meet Samir Paul Kapur, who visited Nepal for three days beginning April 20.

Gor is also expected to convey Washington’s willingness to support Nepal’s new government and encourage investment, provided necessary legal reforms are implemented.
