KATHMANDU: The government is set to reduce its ownership in Nepal Telecom to 66 percent, selling the remaining shares to the general public by the upcoming Poush.
Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle made the announcement while presenting the budget for the fiscal year 2026/27 to a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Friday.
At present, institutional investors hold 91.53 percent of Nepal Telecom, while the general public owns 8.47 percent. The government plans to offload additional shares to the public while retaining a 66 percent stake.
“We will use the proceeds to make Nepal a tech hub,” Wagle said.
Although similar plans to reduce government ownership in the company had been announced earlier, they were not implemented. This time, the government has set a clear timeline to increase public participation in Nepal Telecom.
