UDAYAPUR: Commercial melon farming is emerging as a major attraction in Hadiya of Chaudandigadhi Municipality-9, Udayapur.
The sandy land that had become barren due to river erosion a few years ago is now covered in greenery. Local young farmer Pulkit Chaudhary has set an example by starting organic melon farming on around six bighas of land.
Chaudhary, a farmer, said that more than 3,000 kilograms of melons have been produced this year alone, at a time when demand for the fruit is increasing during the summer season.
He said the pesticide-free, tasty, and juicy melons have received a positive response in the market. He also plans to expand the farming area to nine to 10 bighas next year by leasing additional land.
Alongside melon farming, preparations are also underway for the production of off-season vegetables. The initiative, launched with the aim of making agriculture a long-term source of income and employment, is expected to provide direct employment opportunities to 30 to 40 people in the coming days.
Mayor of Chaudandigadhi Municipality, Kaluman Lama, said the municipality would provide necessary support for organic and model farming.
Farmers say the area around the Triyuga River in Udayapur has great potential for melon farming, as sandy and loamy soil is considered suitable for cultivating melons.
As more young people seeking opportunities in agriculture are finding ways to become self-employed in their own villages, interest in commercial melon farming is steadily growing in Udayapur.
