KATHMANDU: NCP leader Jhalanath Khanal has said the party can no longer be run under its traditional structure and working style, stressing the need for restructuring and transformation.
Speaking at a programme organised by the NCP Koshi Province Contact Committee in Kathmandu on Saturday, Khanal said the party’s structure, policies and working methods must change in line with the evolving political context.
He said senior and veteran leaders should focus on policymaking, providing guidance and training party cadres rather than holding on to positions. He also urged young cadres to step forward and take on leadership responsibilities instead of remaining limited to receiving advice from senior leaders.
Khanal stressed the need to develop courage, confidence and creativity among young leaders and bring them to the forefront of the party.
He said merely offering abstract interpretations in the name of socialism would not be enough, arguing that the party must present the public with a clear and concrete programme for scientific socialism with Nepali characteristics.
Claiming that the country is going through a serious political crisis, Khanal said reactionary forces are active in various forms.
He said traditional political parties should unite and move forward in such circumstances but accused them of becoming directionless. Referring to the Nepali Congress as still divided into two factions, Khanal said it was currently unable to provide a concrete political solution to the country in a united manner.
Khanal also claimed that a majority within the CPN-UML had already come around to the need for party transformation. He called on left and progressive forces to seriously review the current political situation and move forward with a new direction.
