Gen-Z United coordinator arrested over alleged anti-religious remarks on social media

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a man accused of posting statements on social media that allegedly hurt religious sentiments and incited religious discord.

According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, the individual was detained for allegedly making provocative remarks, including statements threatening to “set fire to temples and monasteries.”

The arrest followed the circulation of a controversial video on social media. Police identified the accused as 27-year-old Janak Pariyar, originally from Aathbiskot Municipality-12 in Rukum West and currently residing in Baniyatar of Tokha Municipality-8 in Kathmandu.

Pariyar is also the coordinator of Gen-Z United, a group formed after the protests of September 2025. During the interim government led by Sushila Karki, he was frequently seen around Singha Durbar.

At the time, he had submitted memorandums and raised various demands during meetings with former Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal and other officials.

Police said Pariyar had occasionally delivered inflammatory speeches under the banner of Gen-Z United, but his recent remarks were deemed capable of disturbing social and communal harmony.

Authorities said further investigation into the case is underway.

Kathmandu District Police spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai stated that Pariyar was arrested after being found involved in activities likely to disrupt religious harmony.
