Govt to unveil fiscal year budget today

KAHTMANDU: Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle is presenting the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 (2026/27) at a joint meeting of the Federal Parliament today (Friday).

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP)-led government, formed with a near two-thirds majority following the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) election, is preparing to unveil the budget in line with its commitment paper and governance reform plan. The government’s 100-point reform agenda, along with the priorities and principles of the Appropriation Bill, has served as the basis for the budget formulation.

Suggestions provided by lawmakers from both Houses of Parliament, as well as the government’s governance blueprint, have also been incorporated into the budget preparation process.

Finance Minister Dr Wagle will read out the budget document during the joint meeting of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly on Friday, Jestha 15 of the Nepali calendar, which also marks Republic Day. The budget presentation is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

The government has stated that this year’s budget aims to make income and expenditure estimates more transparent and result-oriented. Earlier, the National Planning Commission had set a ceiling of Rs 1,890 billion for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.

The government has also emphasized that suggestions from stakeholders have been taken into consideration. Although the budget for the current fiscal year was initially announced at around Rs 1,964 billion, it was later reduced to Rs 1,688 billion by then Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal following the formation of the government after the Gen Z movement.

Jestha 15 has remained the constitutionally mandated date for budget presentation since the promulgation of the Constitution in 2072 BS.
