Kathmandu records minimum temperature of 6.5 degrees Celsius

KATHMANDU: The initial minimum temperature in the Kathmandu Valley dropped by around two degrees Celsius today compared to the previous day.

According to the Weather Forecasting Division, the minimum temperature in Kathmandu was recorded at 6.5 degrees Celsius at 5:45 am on Thursday. At the same time on Wednesday, the temperature had stood at 8.5 degrees Celsius.

However, by 8:45 am on Thursday, the minimum temperature rose slightly to 7.5 degrees Celsius, about one degree higher than the early-morning reading. The official minimum temperature is determined at 8:45 am, and meteorologists say today’s final reading may still vary slightly.

Meteorologists explain that a fall in the minimum temperature indicates colder mornings. When skies remain clear overnight, heat escapes more easily, leading to lower morning temperatures. Conversely, cloudy conditions at night tend to trap heat and raise minimum temperatures.

In contrast, maximum temperatures behave differently. Cloud cover during the day often lowers maximum temperatures by blocking sunlight, while clear skies allow temperatures to rise.

The Division measures minimum and maximum temperatures across the country, including Kathmandu, on a daily basis. The minimum temperature is officially recorded at 8:45 am, while the maximum temperature is measured at 5:45 pm.
