KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), requesting a copy of the investigation report and related documents concerning the Gen-Z movement.
In the letter, Oli argued that the Commission’s decision and conclusions appeared contradictory and maintained that he has the right to know the facts and basis behind the findings.
Referring to the incidents of Bhadra 23, 2082 BS, Oli stated that schoolchildren had allegedly been used as human shields to attack the Parliament building, breach police barricades and spread disorder. He further claimed that on the following day, Bhadra 24, violent incidents including arson, vandalism and looting took place across the country, targeting state institutions, security agencies, government offices, political party offices, media outlets and private residences of political leaders.
Oli noted that the NHRC had publicly disclosed that it conducted an investigation into the incidents.
Questioning the Commission’s reported decision made through meeting no. 177, Oli claimed that the recommendation section and factual findings did not align. He also accused the Commission of remaining silent on those involved in arson and attempts to capture state mechanisms, while alleging that it had bowed to certain individuals.
Expressing dissatisfaction that no formal information had been provided nearly 30 days after the decision was made public, Oli requested four sets of documents from the Commission.
These include a certified copy of decision no. 177, a copy of the report submitted by the committee led by Commission member Lily Thapa, details and reasons for any amendments made to the report, and copies of all collected statements and supporting documents.
Stating that the decision directly affects him, Oli said that as a citizen he has the right to understand the factual and legal basis of the Commission’s conclusions and urged the Commission to cooperate in upholding the rule of law.
