KATHMANDU: The World Press Council Association has strongly condemned threats, government surveillance, pressure, and intimidation directed at senior journalist Kishor Shrestha.
The association expressed serious concern over attempts to pressure Shrestha into revealing his journalistic sources following investigative reporting involving government officials in Nepal.
According to the association, source confidentiality, press freedom, and media independence are fundamental rights of democratic journalism and are guaranteed internationally.
The WAPC urged authorities to immediately stop all forms of threats, pressure, surveillance, and repression targeting journalists. It also stressed the need to ensure a fear-free environment for media professionals to carry out their professional responsibilities.
The organization further called on Press Council Nepal, human rights bodies, media stakeholders, and the Government of Nepal to unite in ensuring the safety and security of Kishore Shrestha.
WAPC President David Omwoyo said, “A free and independent press is the foundation of democracy. No journalist should face threats or intimidation because of their work. Concerned authorities in Nepal must protect press freedom and ensure a safe environment for journalists.”
Reaffirming its commitment to the safety of journalists worldwide, the association also emphasized that journalism must be protected from fear, threats, and any form of interference.
