Basnet warns govt move on Karki report could push country towards conflict

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet has criticised the government’s decision to implement the Gauri Bahadur Karki Commission report, calling it conspiratorial and warning that it could push the country towards renewed conflict.

Basnet said the decision to form a separate task force to study cases involving security personnel while moving ahead with action against political figures reflects a biased approach. According to him, such selective implementation raises concerns about fairness and intent.

Taking to social media after the government made its decision public, Basnet expressed concern that the move could escalate tensions. He argued that if the report is used as a tool for arrests or political retaliation, it could create instability and deepen divisions.

Basnet also stated that the government’s approach appears unacceptable, stressing that justice must be applied equally to all parties. He warned that any perceived imbalance in accountability could lead to strong resistance.

The criticism comes after the government, led by Prime Minister Balen, decided in its first Cabinet meeting to move forward with the implementation of the report related to the Gen-Z movement incidents. The decision includes further study regarding security forces, while action against political leadership is expected to proceed more directly.

Basnet maintained that such a distinction in handling different groups could undermine the principle of equal justice and create political friction at a sensitive time.
