Law Minister Sobita Gautam prioritizes transitional justice, vows legal reforms

KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam has said that resolving the long-pending issue of transitional justice will be a key priority of the government.

Speaking to journalists shortly after assuming office at Singha Durbar on Friday, Gautam stated that the government will work in coordination to conclude issues that have remained unresolved for years.

“The issue of transitional justice and other matters that had reached the final stage in the past were halted due to changes in government. Now, those issues must be concluded,” she said.

Gautam stressed that the government’s primary focus will be on long-term transformation through policy reforms. “The Law Ministry may not always produce immediately visible results, but it plays a crucial role in bringing long-term impact through policy changes. There is a long-standing need to amend many laws, and we will move forward with those reforms at a faster pace,” she added.

She also highlighted the importance of coordination between the government and Parliament to make the law-making process more transparent and predictable. Highlighting the principle of separation of powers, Gautam said a balanced relationship between the two institutions is essential.

“Parliament must hold the government accountable, and the government should not treat Parliament like a puppet,” she said.
