Nepal Bar Association voices objection to Karki Commission report

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association has expressed disagreement with the findings of the commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, which investigated the violent incidents on September 8 and 9, 2025.

The Bar Association objected to the report’s references to the judiciary and legal profession, arguing that the commission exceeded its mandate by commenting on courts and legal practice. To address the matter, the association has convened a meeting of its advisory committee.

Bar Secretary General Kedar Prasad Koirala stated that the report could negatively impact public perception of the judiciary and legal professionals. He added that a serious discussion among lawyers would be held on this issue.

The commission’s report had suggested reforms to make justice more accessible, including reducing lawyer fees and removing irregularities and discrepancies in the legal process. It noted that even for simple applications submitted on behalf of vulnerable citizens, lawyers often charge thousands of rupees.

The Bar Association argued that such statements could create a negative impression of the judiciary and legal profession, and formally expressed its disagreement with the report.
