Adopt effective measures to minimize seismic risks: President

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has stressed the need for public awareness, preparedness, and the adoption of safety measures to minimize risks from earthquakes.

In a message on the occasion of the 10th memorial day of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, President Paudel said Nepal is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, making it essential to enhance public awareness on earthquake risk reduction, preparedness, response, and safety measures to minimize loss and damage.

Paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the earthquake that struck Gorkha (Barpak) on April 25, 2015, and its aftershocks, the President said earthquakes are natural disasters, and rapid urbanization is further increasing seismic risks.

He noted that while earthquakes cannot be prevented, their impacts can be reduced through preparedness and safety measures. He also emphasized that Nepal’s geography and unplanned physical structures contribute significantly to earthquake risks.

“There is a need for continuous campaigns on safe construction and vigilance. Newly built and reconstructed structures should reflect our originality along with earthquake-resistant technology,” the message stated.
