KATHMANDU: Geeta Kumari Shah, who was injured in a fire set by protesters on September 9, 2025, during the Gen-Z movement, has told high-level commission led by former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki that she was burned while trying to protect a police officer.
In her statement to the commission, Shah said she was returning from a watch shop at Koteshwor Chowk when she witnessed protesters surrounding Police Constable Chij Kumar Kumal, attacking him with sharp weapons, bricks, stones, sticks, and punches.
“To save him, I went close to assist, and in the process, I was also beaten. When I tried to stop him from being hit and attempted to take cover near him, the protesters poured a flammable liquid, like petrol, on both of us and set us on fire,” Shah said.
Shah said her clothes caught fire, and in panic she removed them. She was then taken to Kantipur Hospital, after which she lost consciousness and was transferred to Kathmandu Medical College for treatment.
According to her statement, around 40 percent of her body was burned, with severe injuries from her right arm to her shoulder and down to the soles of her feet. She is still undergoing treatment.
