Govt to relocate riverbank settlers, identify genuine squatters

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Balen Shah has pledged to distribute land to squatters across the country in line with his election promises.

The clarification comes amid criticism following preparations to remove settlements along the riverbanks in Kathmandu. As protests grew, the Prime Minister addressed the issue through social media, stating that no force would be used in the process.

“Those living in vulnerable conditions along riverbanks in areas such as Thapathali, Gairigaun, and Manohara are being relocated safely, with full consideration of humanitarian concerns,” he said.

He explained that the removal of settlements is aimed at protecting residents from recurring floods. While acknowledging that the settlements are being cleared, he reiterated the government’s commitment to providing land to genuine squatters.

“We have not forgotten the promises made during the elections,” Shah said, referring to commitments outlined in his campaign and government agenda, including provisions related to managing squatters and preventing encroachment on public land.

“We are making internal preparations to fulfill those commitments,” he added. Reaffirming the government’s position, Shah said, “We will separate encroachers from genuine squatters, complete the identification process, and distribute land to eligible families across the country as soon as possible.”
