KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa on Tuesday urged the party to focus entirely on its upcoming general convention while stressing the need for accountability and transparency in key national issues.
Addressing the Central Working Committee meeting in Sanepa, Thapa also congratulated the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) for securing a five-year mandate to govern.
Thapa highlighted that the general convention, which he described as a vehicle he is steering, must move forward inclusively, without bias or prejudice regarding past participation in special conventions.
“I am leading this vehicle as party president. There will be no discrimination based on who participated or did not participate in previous special conventions. We will advance with all members fully engaged,” he said.
Highlighting the party’s broader role beyond elections, Thapa said Nepali Congress was established to uphold democratic principles and serve the nation, not solely to contest polls.
“The party predates elections and its mandate extends beyond electoral outcomes. While we have established electoral procedures, the party itself represents a much broader democratic framework. Internal reforms remain a priority,” he noted.
On his own resignation, Thapa clarified that he had submitted it voluntarily to Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma in line with party statutes and as part of his accountability for the recent election outcome. “I assumed responsibility for the election results and followed party procedures in submitting my resignation. This was neither a hasty nor pressured decision,” he explained.
Thapa also called for the immediate publication and implementation of the Gen-Z movement inquiry report. He stressed that the report should be acted upon impartially and that those responsible for wrongdoing must face consequences. “The report must be released without delay and implemented. Nepali Congress firmly supports unbiased action based on its findings,” he said.
In addition, Thapa congratulated the RSP and its leadership for obtaining the mandate to govern for the next five years, extending his best wishes for a successful tenure in accordance with the constitution and the spirit of youth-led movements. He also reiterated the Nepali Congress’s role as a constructive opposition to ensure government accountability.
“The party has received a distinct and mature responsibility. We will hold the government accountable while supporting it constructively to achieve national progress,” he said.
