World Tuberculosis Day being observed today

KATHMANDU: World Tuberculosis Day is being observed today with the slogan “Yes! We will end tuberculosis: National campaign, our contribution.”

The day is marked annually on March 24 to raise awareness about tuberculosis control. Various programs are being organized across the country with the goal of ending tuberculosis by 2035 and making Nepal tuberculosis-free by 2050.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, this year’s slogan emphasizes the importance of a national campaign, shared responsibility, and public participation.

At the request of the Ministry, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has urged all local levels to observe the day by organizing awareness programs, focusing on the identification and diagnosis of tuberculosis, a major public health concern in Nepal.

According to the World Health Organization, around 67,000 new tuberculosis cases were reported in Nepal in 2024. Treatment services are available at 6,241 health facilities nationwide, with microscopy services in 785 institutions and free rapid testing in 142 facilities.

The ministry stated that 31 centers and 98 sub-centers are currently providing treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis. The Tuberculosis-Free Nepal campaign has been expanded to 149 local levels.

Health experts advise that individuals experiencing a persistent cough for more than three weeks, blood in sputum, breathing difficulties, chest pain, sudden weight loss, excessive sweating, or fatigue should seek testing at the nearest health facility. People with weakened immunity are at higher risk of infection.

Experts also warn that smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug use increase vulnerability to tuberculosis, and the disease can recur if the full course of medication is not completed.

Tuberculosis is curable with regular treatment, and prevention through awareness remains crucial. The Ministry has urged local governments to organize interaction and awareness programs by mobilizing available resources to strengthen tuberculosis control efforts.
