KATHMANDU: MP Mingma Gyabu Sherpa has called on the government to address problems in the tourism and mountaineering sectors and create opportunities for Nepali climbers to remain in the country and showcase their expertise.
Speaking at an event organised on Sunday to mark the silver jubilee of the Everest Summiteers Association, Sherpa said he would raise political and policy-level issues affecting the mountaineering and tourism sectors.
He stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together to create an environment where Nepali climbers can find opportunities and build their careers within the country.
Sherpa warned that failure to collectively advocate for the interests of Nepali climbers could force even accomplished mountaineers to seek opportunities and settle abroad.
He said Mount Everest should not be viewed merely as a mountain, but as a symbol of Nepal’s pride, prestige and international identity. He called for greater emphasis on both its conservation and promotion, as well as the welfare of climbers.
Sherpa also said the government had begun the process of amending the Tourism Act and urged the association to submit necessary recommendations during the process.
At the event, Everest climbers demanded that 50 percent of the personnel deployed by the government as liaison officers in the mountains be allocated to experienced climbers.
The event also honoured individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields.
