SC issues show cause notice on writ petition against Attorney General

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a show cause notice on a writ petition filed against appointment of Dr Narayan Datt Kandel as an Attorney General.

The writ petition was filed questioning Dr Kandel’s qualification for the post. A single bench of Justice Kumar Regmi issued the order on Thursday.

Spokesperson at SC, Arjun Prasad Koirala, informed that both sides were called to discuss whether to issue interim order on April 30.

Three separate writ petitions were filed on Wednesday against Kandel’s appointment to the post of Attorney General, to which, the SC issued a show cause order after preliminary hearing on Thursday. Advocates, including Shivaraj Baral, Madhav Basnet and Dipak Joshi, had filed the petitions, questioning Dr Kandel’s qualification.

In the writ petition, they argued Dr Kandel had not met the criteria of 15-years of continuous legal practice to be qualified for the post of Attorney General.
