National Assembly members raise concerns over squatters, cooperatives, and disaster response

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers in the National Assembly have drawn the government’s attention to the need for a clear and concrete action plan to address the ongoing squatters’ problem.

During the zero hour of Friday’s session, members raised a range of public concerns including displacement, human rights issues, cooperative fraud, infrastructure delays, and disaster impacts.

Lawmaker Manrupa Sharma urged the government to ensure effective psychological counseling services for children, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities who were relocated after squatters were removed from riverbank areas in Kathmandu.

Similarly, Renu Chand stressed the need to protect the human rights and fundamental rights of squatters, calling for proper food and living conditions in holding centers.

Lawmaker Padam Bahadur Pariyar also drew attention to vacant National Assembly seats, noting that some positions have remained unfilled for the past six months.

Rukmini Koirala raised concerns over compensation delays related to land acquired for the bridge construction at Bharadah under the Koshi Agreement.

Bishnu Kumari Sapkota demanded immediate justice for cooperative fraud victims, while Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma urged the government to provide relief to families affected by heavy rainfall in Chankheli of Humla, which caused damage to livestock and disrupted daily life.

Shri Krishna Prasad Adhikari questioned whether compensation for cooperative victims would be paid from the state treasury or recovered from those responsible for misappropriation.

Meanwhile, Sabitri Mall expressed concern over stalled second-phase work in Jaljale, Dailekh, where reports of natural gas reserves had previously been submitted to the government.
