KATHMANDU: Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has emphasized the need for effective implementation of state policies to ensure equitable distribution of and access to water resources.
In a message on the occasion of World Water Day 2026, he extended his congratulations and stated, “Water is the foundation of life, and its conservation and proper use are our shared responsibility.”
The Vice President noted that Nepal is increasingly facing a serious water crisis, worsened by climate change and the accelerated melting of glaciers.
“Groundwater levels are declining, particularly in the Terai-Madhes region, while springs and natural water sources in the hills are drying up. Pollution, unplanned infrastructure, and weak management have further reduced the capacity of water sources,” the message said.
He stressed the need for collective efforts to turn these challenges into opportunities, adding that water conservation is not just an environmental concern but a matter of national survival and future security.
Despite Nepal’s rich water resources, Yadav pointed out that the country has yet to effectively utilize and conserve them. He called for a scientific and long-term approach to managing rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and groundwater, with active participation from local communities. He also highlighted the importance of adopting modern technologies for water storage, reuse, and purification.
“May World Water Day inspire us to prioritize water conservation at the national level, ensure access to safe and clean water for future generations, promote social equity through fair distribution, advance the protection of glaciers, wetlands, and natural resources as a collective mission, and recognize the vital role of women in water management,” he said.
