KATHMANDU: Spokesperson of Nepali Congress, Devaraj Chalise, has alleged that incidents of misconduct and attacks targeting Congress candidates are increasing.
Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Sunday to express views on preparations for the House of Representatives election and other contemporary issues, Chalise said acts of humiliation and mistreatment against Congress candidates have intensified as the March 5 election approaches.
“As the election draws near, incidents of mistreatment and humiliation against Congress candidates are taking place. Such activities must be stopped immediately,” Chalise said.
He stressed that the government must create an environment conducive to a free and fair election, clarifying that the party has not so far cast doubt on the election process. “The government should ensure a fair electoral environment. The Congress has not raised any suspicion so far,” he said.
Chalise also stated that the party does not engage in politics of fear. “The Congress does not practice politics of fear. We urge our candidates and leaders to remain firm and actively engage in election campaigning,” he added.
He cautioned all sides against activities that could disrupt religious harmony during the election period. “At a time when elections are underway, religious harmony among the people must not be disturbed,” he said.
Describing personal insults and the burning of party flags as condemnable, Chalise said the Congress also denounced the incident of the CPN UML flag being burned in Tulsipur, Dang.
Claiming that public attraction toward the Nepali Congress is growing, Chalise said senior leaders from the CPN UML and the Rastriya Swatantra Party have joined the Congress.
He also called on leaders and cadres who had left the party or joined other parties to return. “At this stage, we urge those who left home to return to the Congress. We also welcome those affiliated with other parties,” Chalise said.
