Home Minister Gurung meets RSP chief Lamichhane amid mounting resignation pressure

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Sudan Gurung has reached the residence of Rabi Lamichhane in Budhanilkantha for discussions, as pressure mounts on him to resign following a series of controversies.

Gurung has come under scrutiny over allegations, including his reported partnership in a company linked to controversial businessman Deepak Bhatta and claims of concealing property details.

Sources said the meeting between Gurung and Lamichhane is taking place at a time when Prime Minister Balen Shah has already sought clarification from the Home Minister. It is understood that Lamichhane may advise Gurung on a possible political exit.

Gurung was appointed Home Minister with specific responsibilities assigned by Prime Minister Shah. Both Gurung and Shah were earlier aligned on taking action against KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over their alleged involvement in the crackdown during the Bhadra protests.

Gurung is also facing accusations of purchasing shares worth millions overnight following the Gen-Z protests without disclosing the source of funds.

Amid the growing controversy, Prime Minister Shah on Tuesday sought clarification from Gurung. In contrast, Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister Deepak Sah was earlier dismissed directly on Lamichhane’s recommendation without being asked for clarification.

Despite facing more serious allegations than Sah, Gurung has been given an opportunity to respond, raising further political questions.
