Nepali sailor detained by Iranian forces in Strait of Hormuz

KATHMANDU: A Nepali worker has been detained by Iranian forces in the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, an area that has drawn global attention amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

The detainee has been identified as Amrit Jha, 30, from Gaighat in Udayapur District.

According to Ramkaji Khadka, joint secretary and chief of the West Asia Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nepal, Iranian forces took Jha into custody from the Hormuz maritime region.

Officials said he was detained at Bandar Abbas Port while the vessel he was working on was en route to collect oil in Iran.

Jha had travelled to Dubai about two years ago for employment. He had been working as a crew member on a vessel operated by Black Sea Marine LLC.

Authorities confirmed that Jha served as part of the ship’s crew. Efforts are expected to continue through diplomatic channels to ascertain his condition and facilitate further coordination regarding the case.
