RSP lawmakers question gas shortage despite increased supply

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have questioned why cooking gas remained in short supply despite a significant increase in the number of cylinders supplied to the market.

At the RSP parliamentary party meeting held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, lawmakers noted that around 2.2 million cylinders were supplied in the Nepali month of Baisakh, while the figure had increased to around 4 million cylinders by Shrawan. They questioned why the market continued to experience a shortage despite the increased supply.

According to parliamentary party Deputy Leader Ganesh Parajuli, ministers explained the technical and managerial reasons behind the shortage and briefed lawmakers on efforts being made to resolve the problem.

The meeting also formed a task force to amend the RSP parliamentary party statute. Parajuli said the task force, coordinated by the party’s chief whip, has been assigned to update the statute in line with current needs. It has been given seven days to prepare a report and draft working procedures.

He said the revised statute aims to ensure that lawmakers maintain dignity and discipline in Parliament, clarify their respective responsibilities, amplify the voices of the people and encourage greater participation in the lawmaking process.

During the meeting, ministers presented progress reports and outlined activities carried out by their respective ministries. Lawmakers, meanwhile, raised issues from their constituencies, shared complaints received from the public and pointed out shortcomings in the government’s performance. Parajuli said the meeting also conducted a self-assessment of why the government’s work has not been effectively communicated to and reached the general public.
