KANCHANPUR: A 1,220-meter concrete embankment has been constructed in Kanchanpur to control flooding along the Mahakali River.
The embankment was built to minimize the damage caused by the annual floods of the Mahakali River to settlements and agricultural land along its banks. The Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project Office, Kanchanpur, constructed the embankment at a cost of Rs 116.5 million.
Project Chief Ranjan Raj Bhattarai said a 507-meter reinforced cement concrete (RCC) embankment was constructed along the Mahakali River in Dodhara Chandani Municipality, while a 255-meter RCC embankment was constructed along the Jogbudha River in Bhimdatta Municipality.
The construction has helped protect Kutiyakawar settlement in Dodhara Chandani Municipality, which has been affected by floods every year. A total of 762 meters of embankment was constructed to protect the settlement.
Kutiakawar, located at the confluence of the Mahakali River to the east and the Jogbudha River to the north, has been vulnerable to annual flooding from both rivers. The project office has also been carrying out regular repair and maintenance of existing structures for river control and management.
The office is undertaking maintenance and repair work on a 25-year-old embankment along the Mahakali River, which has deteriorated over time. Meanwhile, a dry port is being constructed in Dodhara Chandani across the Mahakali River.
