KATHMANDU: Independent lawmaker and former minister Mahabir Pun, who won the House of Representatives election from Myagdi by a wide margin on March 5, is still waiting for the formal swearing-in ceremony.
However, as the political mechanism has delayed setting the date for the oath-taking, he has chosen not to remain idle, instead taking to the streets of Pokhara to sell his autobiography.
Soon after the election, Pun had completed the first round of discussions in all six local units of Myagdi, consulting local representatives and communities on development priorities and budget planning. On Thursday morning, he was seen in Nadipur, Pokhara, continuing his unconventional approach.
Announcing his plan through social media, Pun said that with no clear timeline for the oath-taking, he found it more productive to spend his time selling books rather than waiting.
“There are still no signs of the swearing-in ceremony taking place,” Pun wrote in a satirical tone. “So, starting at 10 am today, I will be selling my autobiography near Singapore Café, about 50 meters west of Balamandir in Nadipur.”
Despite being elected as a Member of Parliament, Pun has continued his simple lifestyle. Addressing local leaders in a lighthearted manner, he remarked, “What else should I do, Mayor sir? Please don’t take it otherwise.”
At a time when elected representatives in Nepal are often focused on the prestige and power of office, Pun has instead chosen to engage directly with the public, even prioritizing the sale of his own life story. Known as an innovator, his distinctive style since entering politics has drawn widespread attention on social media.
